A US-based education expert, Mrs Bolatito Fatoki, has called on schools to strengthen of special education for children with special needs in Nigeria.
Mrs Fatoki made the call on Thursday while speaking at a forum organised for parents in Lagos State tagged Parents Watch Network Hangout.
The hangout, organised by Safe Schools Lagos, a body saddled with the responsibility to ensure safety compliance in schools across the state, is a monthly programme organised to educate parents on child safety and development.
The Texas based teacher while speaking on Dyslexia noted that teachers in Nigerian schools should be trained on how to assist children suffering from the disability.
Describing Dyslexia as a form of brain difficulty in learning, Fatoki advised that early detection and intervention in children should be encouraged among parents.
She advised parents against using abusive and discriminatory attitude on their children suffering from dyslexia noting that giving them support should be prioritised.
While stressing that dyslexia is incurable, Fatoki assured that with proper attention children with the disability can become successful in any chosen career.
In her reaction, SSLAG lead resource person, Dr Bisi Esuruoso, assured parents who have children with dyslexia of hope.
She noted that the hangout was organised for parents to discuss issues affecting children so as to have a better and safe society.
Dr Esuruoso further assured that SSLAG will continue to work towards safety of children in schools across Lagos State.
